KDE 4.0.2 on the Eee
Yesterday the 4.0.2 ebuilds for KDE entered the portage tree and the changelog indicated that panel height was now variable. So I couldn't resist any longer and switched to my favorite environment. This morning enough packages had compiled to give it a try and it's working really great. The system is responsive and most everything fits nicely on the screen.
The only thing not working is the 3D stuff (i.e. Desktop Effects), neither through OpenGL nor XComposite. However, this machine still runs Xorg 7.2 and I'm not upgrading to anything in unstable in the Eee, if not necessary. Especially since the Intel i945 in my Macbook (the Eee has a i915) isn't working any better, even with the latest drivers.

The whole thing took less than 20 hours to compile on this machine. Which sounds insane, considering how long my old desktop took, with more RAM, double the processor speed and a faster disk.
Posted from the Eee, hehe.

Nice to see that someone got
Nice to see that someone got KDE4 (and even Gentoo) working on the Eee. I was in doubt whether I should buy an Eee as well, but this post helped me to decide: I will get it tomorrow. :)
The only thing I need is a USB HDD to get Gentoo onto the Eee. :(

If you don't want to spend
If you don't want to spend any money on a USB HDD and have a spare internal drive lying around you could buy a SATA/EIDE to USB connector. I found one last year at a small shop for less than 15€ and rescued data from several laptops with it. (They normally have the 44pin and 40pin connectors for 3.5'' and 2.5'' drives w/o external power.)
If you get one, consider checking the chipset online first, I had another one that was not that reliable.
